Great Superbowl game! Congratulations to friends in New Orleans, and Saints fans everywhere!
02/07/2010 8:00 pm |
In addition to an exciting game, there were some funny ads.
This Green Police Ad was one of my favorites. It reminded me of trying to implement our new solid waste contract last January.

Football is Gay!
02/07/2010 3:01 pm |
Come in to happy delusions today during the Superbowl and get a free pack of “Football is Gay”, peppermint gum! The creative minds at Blue Q hit it on the nose again with this one. However, if there was a football team that had a rad rainbow hat like this one on the gum, I [...]

Petitioner wants to rename Bay Area's Mt Diablo
02/07/2010 11:20 am |
A day after I posted a picture of Cathy standing on Mt. Diablo with her sister and grandmother, I got an invite to join the facebook group trying to keep the mountain's name from being changed. So far 67,000 members have signed up to protest the proposed changing of the mountain's name to Mount Reagan. I joined the club, but I doubt they have much to worry about... the name Mount Diablo is historic, dating back to stories involving the Spanish settlers and native Americans. Given that the Bay Area shares Seattle's left-leaning political climate, the petitioner will probably have as much success as someone would have trying to change the name of Mount Rainier to Mount Ellen Craswell.
Here is the story in the San Jose Mercury News.

Renton Hill resident is editor of new "Vacation" mini-movie and superbowl commercial!
02/06/2010 4:02 pm |

My family and I love the four "Vacation" movies, in which lovable but fumbling Clark Griswold takes his family to Walley World, Europe, Las Vegas, and hosts relatives for a big "Griswold Family Christmas." Sometimes when I have a silly or awkward conversation with one of my sons, I'll finish it by saying "good talk, Russ," (which you Clark Griswold fans will understand.)
So I was super-excited to hear that one of Renton's own Renton Hill residents has helped bring the Griswolds back for some more vacation fun.
Kelly Vander Linda, who co-owns Collective Editorial and lives with his family across the street from Philip Arnold Park, has been working with vacation rental company HomeAway on both a Superbowl Commercial and a new web-based mini-movie (20 minutes or so) that will be available at midnight tonight.
Kelly has kept the project close to the vest, but HomeAway has now unveiled the project on Youtube, and is starting to tease viewers in anticipation of tomorrow's releases.
I think this is a great idea for an ad campaign, and I'm sure it will be successful. Thanks to Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, the rest of the cast, HomeAway, and Renton's own Kelly Vander Linda for bringing the Griswolds back!
Here are the youtube teasers:
UPDATE SUNDAY MORNING:
Here is the full very funny "mini-movie:" (Great job Kelly!)

Some older family photos
02/06/2010 1:20 pm |
We spent this last Christmas with family in California, and enjoyed catching up with everyone. While down there we had fun viewing old slides with Cathy's family. I realize some of you won't be that interested, but for those of you who know Cathy I think you will enjoy this small sample of photos.
Cathy (in pink) with her sister Laura (in yellow) and her grandmother Dorothy Harris on Mount Diablo, California, overlooking the Livermore Valley where Cathy and I grew up.
Cathy (in pink) with her sister Laura (in blue). Their mother Sally holds their brother Billy. (Four years later they would welcome a new brother Michael.)

Laura, Cathy, and Billy on their uncle Bill Harris
Cathy's Dad (Bill Sutcliffe) is a private pilot, who flew his family around California and across the country twice in a Cessna aircraft. Cathy's Mom, Cathy, and Billy are pictured in this California outing.
Cathy, Laura, and Billy sleeping in the Cessna on a long stretch across the country.
Laura, Cathy and Bill ride the steam train at Tilden Park, in Berkeley Hills in California.

Calling the newest generation of community leaders!
02/06/2010 11:44 am |
Meegan Prince reminds me that the inaugural meeting for a brand new community organization will occur in just over two weeks, on February 23rd.
Her note gives the details very well, so I'm copying it below. This organization, aimed at the newest generation of community leaders, is sure to be fun and rewarding for those who participate. And I know the group's activities will provide great support to the Renton Community. _____________________ Here is Meegan's note:
Hi Randy, I hope you are well. The Next Curve kickoff and inaugural meeting is coming up on Tuesday, February 23rd. We were wondering if you might consider doing a blog about it to help us a promote the event. I've attached the promo flyer, and details follow: I'd like to invite you to learn more about a new community group called "The Next Curve," recently formed in partnership with the Renton Community Foundation. It's a philanthropic and community leadership group for young(er) professionals in Renton. Their mission statement is:
To continue Renton's legacy of philanthropy and leadership by cultivating the next generation of our community through relationship building and civic engagement.
It's Pretty straightforward. A minimum annual donation of $250 (tax-deductible) is required to become an official member, and they will be distributing grants to local non-profits with the membership proceeds on an annual basis.
They will be hosting one event a month, alternating between casual meet-ups and more structured presentations by civic leaders. The first event is on Feb. 23rd at City Hall, with Mayor Denis Law (see attached flyer). You don't have to become a paid member to attend the event.
So, if you'd be interested in joining the group or at least learning more about The Next Curve, do consider attending their kickoff event on 2/23. You can also view their website at: www.thenextcurve.org. Thanks Randy!

Sorry about the website going down; we're back up, and working a javascript issue
02/05/2010 11:12 pm |
Sorry for the outage. And thanks Aaron and Marcie for bringing it to my attention!
My son and I do not know why Livejournal's javascript embedding feature suddenly quit working in my website.
We're embedded the journal using frames for now, and we'll try to fix the javascript. Frames allows the same content, but might look a little odd on some browsers and include some extra scrollbars.
We've also added a direct link to the livejournal content in the web banner, which you can always use if this problem comes back again.
I've got several new topics I hope to cover this weekend, so please keep checking back! I'll also answer the question (in rough terms) about the cost of the Clawson lawsuit. Meanwhile, please keep your comments and discussion coming.
Thanks everyone!
Randy

Grassroot poster creates a buzz!
02/04/2010 3:05 pm |
Check out this cool poster handmade by Catherine Mill of Renton WA. It was done in an awesome grassroots effort to save our local library from KCLS (King County Library System). In a nutshell, and with everyone feeling the effects of the economy, so is dear ol’ Renton. A special election is being held Feb. [...]

Some brutal statistics
02/04/2010 9:35 am |
The plan was to go out for happy hour at Blossom Asian Bistro yesterday afternoon. But there were two signs that indicated otherwise. One was that the place was closed for the holidays. Which holidays, Christmas through President's Day? The other sign was from the Liquor Control Board, stating that the liquor license was suspended for not having adequate lighting to check ID. Anyway, it doesn't look too promising, but I hope Blossom reopens. Needless to say, it's a tough industry even in the best of economic times. Renton Hipster has been around since late 2005. Since then, approximately 63 restaurants have been reviewed. ( Hey, it's hard to count that high.) Of those 63, 36 still exist. In the year 2009 alone, 15 restaurants were mentioned. Of those 15, only 10 still exist. Despite all that, new restaurants reopen, with owners confident that they won't become another statistic, and I hope they're right. I enjoy dining out, and I think that a variety of decent restaurants makes a community a much better place.
